About Plato
Plato (c. 428/427–348/347 BC) was one of the greatest philosophers of Ancient Greece and a student of Socrates. After the death of his teacher, he founded the Academy in Athens, the first long-lasting institution of higher learning in the Western world. Among his students was Aristotle, whose work would shape philosophy for centuries to come.
Writing almost exclusively in the form of dialogues, Plato explored ethics, politics, metaphysics, education, mathematics, aesthetics, and the nature of knowledge. His works—including the Republic, Symposium, Phaedo, Apology, and Timaeus—have been continuously studied for more than 2,300 years and remain central to the history of philosophy and classical literature.
Today, Plato is recognized as one of the founding figures of philosophy, whose ideas continue to inspire scholars, students, and readers around the world.
